CHAPTER TEN

OH. MY. GOD.

What was wrong with her?

She was a simmering pot of lustful imaginings and squirming in her chair like a child unable to sit still. But the pulsing ache he’d kickstarted down low when he’d whispered beside her ear wouldn’t quit and squeezing her thighs together was having zero effect. Except to make it worse.

Pregnancy had a lot to answer for and sheer, unadulterated lust was right up there at the top. She ought to Google it.

Or she could ask the oracle himself?

So, Brendan, in all your research did you happen to come across something that said pregnancy turns a woman into a rampant rabbit?

She laughed, choking on the mouthful of food she had just taken.

His eyes shot to hers, concern flashing in his sexy dark depths—see, sexy! Since when had she labelled his eyes as sexy? Any eyes, for that matter? Her sister would have a field day if she could hear her meandering mind now.

‘Are you okay?’

‘Absolutely!’ She covered her mouth, swallowed her food with a nod. ‘Just my mind wandering.’

‘Care to share?’

A pitched laugh. ‘No.’

He cocked his head to the side, a smile tugging at his lips.

‘Is it okay?’ She gestured to the food, aiming to distract him.

‘It’s great... You’ve scrubbed up on your cooking skills.’

‘Not really. I can make lasagne with my eyes closed. The prawns were a bit of a Leon-inspired adventure.’

He chuckled, taking a slice of bread and using it to scoop up some sauce. ‘Well, Leon should have kept quiet. This would have done perfectly.’

‘It was one of Jessie’s favourites when she was little.’

‘Your mum’s recipe?’

‘Ha, no. My mother wasn’t what you’d call domesticated.’

‘So, you cooked?’

She could see the surprise in his face.

‘I’ll have you know that I’d mastered the art of the microwave by the age of eight and improved from there.’

‘You fed yourself as a kid?’

She chewed over her food, washed it down with some water. ‘Me and Jessie. She’s ten years younger than me so by the time she was ready for real food I could sort a meal. It might not have been balanced but I made sure she ate. And Mum when she was home. To be honest, I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but as I got older and visited friends’ houses, I realised my life wasn’t quite the norm.’

‘That must have been tough.’

She shrugged. ‘It was all I knew.’

His frown deepened. ‘But where were your parents? I know you said your father wasn’t the best but...’

‘Fighting, drinking, socialising...’

The creases either side of his eyes deepened, the sadness in their depths too.

‘Don’t get me wrong, my mother loved us...my father not so much. The day he left the tension in the entire house lifted, but then Mum never did so well on her own so we had the constant cycle of heartbreak. She’d meet a man, fall instantly, then the next week she’d be heartbroken again. It took a long time for her to give up on love entirely and be happy on her own.
