CHAPTER TEN
OH. MY. GOD.
What was wrong with her?
She was a simmering pot of lustful imaginings and squirming in her chair like a child unable to sit still. But the pulsing ache heâd kickstarted down low when heâd whispered beside her ear wouldnât quit and squeezing her thighs together was having zero effect. Except to make it worse.
Pregnancy had a lot to answer for and sheer, unadulterated lust was right up there at the top. She ought to Google it.
Or she could ask the oracle himself?
So, Brendan, in all your research did you happen to come across something that said pregnancy turns a woman into a rampant rabbit?
She laughed, choking on the mouthful of food she had just taken.
His eyes shot to hers, concern flashing in his sexy dark depthsâsee, sexy! Since when had she labelled his eyes as sexy? Any eyes, for that matter? Her sister would have a field day if she could hear her meandering mind now.
âAre you okay?â
âAbsolutely!â She covered her mouth, swallowed her food with a nod. âJust my mind wandering.â
âCare to share?â
A pitched laugh. âNo.â
He cocked his head to the side, a smile tugging at his lips.
âIs it okay?â She gestured to the food, aiming to distract him.
âItâs great... Youâve scrubbed up on your cooking skills.â
âNot really. I can make lasagne with my eyes closed. The prawns were a bit of a Leon-inspired adventure.â
He chuckled, taking a slice of bread and using it to scoop up some sauce. âWell, Leon should have kept quiet. This would have done perfectly.â
âIt was one of Jessieâs favourites when she was little.â
âYour mumâs recipe?â
âHa, no. My mother wasnât what youâd call domesticated.â
âSo, you cooked?â
She could see the surprise in his face.
âIâll have you know that Iâd mastered the art of the microwave by the age of eight and improved from there.â
âYou fed yourself as a kid?â
She chewed over her food, washed it down with some water. âMe and Jessie. Sheâs ten years younger than me so by the time she was ready for real food I could sort a meal. It might not have been balanced but I made sure she ate. And Mum when she was home. To be honest, I didnât think anything of it at the time, but as I got older and visited friendsâ houses, I realised my life wasnât quite the norm.â
âThat must have been tough.â
She shrugged. âIt was all I knew.â
His frown deepened. âBut where were your parents? I know you said your father wasnât the best but...â
âFighting, drinking, socialising...â
The creases either side of his eyes deepened, the sadness in their depths too.
âDonât get me wrong, my mother loved us...my father not so much. The day he left the tension in the entire house lifted, but then Mum never did so well on her own so we had the constant cycle of heartbreak. Sheâd meet a man, fall instantly, then the next week sheâd be heartbroken again. It took a long time for her to give up on love entirely and be happy on her own.
